Key Laboratory of Advanced Technologies of Materials, Ministry of Education

The Key Laboratory of Advanced Technologies of Materials (KLATM), Ministry of Education (MOE), was approved for construction in 2003, officially established in 2007, and successfully passed the appraisal by MOE in 2012. The KLATM is positioned closely the national strategic demands for advanced materials and cutting-edge areas of materials science. The KLATM focuses on the surface and interface profiles of materials preparation, processing and application to develop core technologies for interface controlling, surface modification, material joining and service evaluation. The KLATM has set up four distinct research fields including functional composites, surface modification and functionalization, material welding techniques, and service behavior and evaluation to construct into an international known base for basic research and technological innovation of advanced materials.

(1) Interface Controlling Technologies: Focus on the surface and interface profiles of materials preparation and modification to study new compositing mechanisms and develop novel technologies for function control.

(2) Surface Modification Technologies: Clarify synergistic mechanisms for surface structures and service functions of materials to develop novel surface modification technologies for key structural equipment, artificial organs and medical devices.

(3) Material Joining Technologies: Clarify the surface and interface fusion jointing technologies under severe cold, high speed and heavy load conditions to break the bottleneck of welding technologies for jointless tracks and vehicles.

(4) Service Evaluation Technologies: Clarify the damaging mechanisms and principles for heel and rail materials to develop microfriction theories and characterization technologies and to support service safeties of key devices for the high-speed railway.
